FIRE DETECTION / LOAD-BEARING STRUCTURE

Photographic records of actual deviations identified during Electrical & ELV construction reviews.

Projects and construction participants are anonymised.

PHOTO RECORD / FACT

Fire detection

EL-025 / FIRE DETECTION / LOAD-BEARING STRUCTURE

PRIORITY / MAJOR

OBSERVED

A through-chase has been cut into a load-bearing reinforced concrete beam to route a fire alarm cable line.

RISK

An intervention has been made in a load-bearing structure without confirmation that the solution is acceptable. The possible effect of the opening/chase on the structure requires assessment.

WHAT TO CHECK

The working and structural documentation, actual location and dimensions of the opening/chase, and availability of an agreed cable penetration solution for the load-bearing structure. Obtain a structural engineer’s opinion where necessary.

RECOMMENDED ACTION

Do not undertake further work that conceals this area until the penetration has been examined and an agreed technical solution has been obtained from the responsible designer/structural engineer.

PRIORITY / MAJOR

Priority reflects an engineering assessment of the recorded condition in the circumstances of the particular project. It does not replace a designer’s opinion, testing or measurements where these are required.

These examples show the format of engineering records. The final assessment takes into account the design documentation, design solutions and conditions of the specific project.
